Skull Ratings Explained

Movie ratings on this site follow the skull format. It was original - until it wasn’t. I thought I was the only one doing it before I saw it on some other horror movie review sites. No worries, stars are way more overdone. Below is a guide to how we define each skull rating that is added to moviefest selections every year. Ratings are very personal and this is ours.

As good as it gets. A movie that defines your Halloween season or ultimate scare.

Not quite as good as it gets, but a super awesome horror movie.

💀💀💀💀

A great movie.  One you will watch multiple times. This should be the minimum standard for horror films.

💀💀💀+

A really, really good horror movie. Close enough to the minimum standard to earn multiple viewings.

💀💀💀

A good film. Worthy of your regular list or at least checking out to see if it works for you

💀💀+

Movie is so-so. Not a must see or maybe even worthy of recommending, but a film that will likely keep you watching through to closing credits. A lot of horror films are here and we still watch them multiple times.
